What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is the world's oldest and most respected fraternal organisation. It's high ethical and moral standards encourages good men to become better men by promoting a life devoted to high ideals, community service and benevolence.
What are it's aims?
Freemasonry is an organisation formed to join together in friendship men of integrity and goodwill from all walks of life. It sets high standards of behaviour to be maintained in daily life, so providing an example to the community. The sustained practice of Freemasonry provides significant and rewarding opportunities for self-development and community service.
Who are Freemasons?
Freemasons are men of character and substance with high ideals and worthwhile values who want to make a difference in the community. In short they are citizens of quality and good reputation who have taken up Freemasonry because they believe that what they do in their Lodges improves the character and enhances their value to their fellows. Men of every race and religion become Freemasons. Each has a personal belief in a Supreme Being and a determination to conduct himself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others. For that reason we believe that Freemasonry is more than just another society or social club; it is a way of life.
What is a Lodge?
The basic membership group of Masons is called a Lodge. Some Lodges attract members with specific social, professional or work-related backgrounds. Lodge Southern Cross aims to be a Lodge of Ceremonial and Masonic Educational excellence.
Lodges are presided over by the Master who is usually elected to serve for a twelve month term. Most Lodge meetings are held monthly. At these meetings new members may be admitted or advanced to a higher rank or such other business conducted as the Master determines.
Lodges operate under a warrant of constitution from the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, in accordance with the regulations for the Government of the Craft.
What are some principles of Freemasonry?
There are three major principles in Freemasonry. They are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.
Brotherly Love: How a man chooses to practice his personal religious beliefs is left entirely up to him, but Freemasonry recognises the strong bond which unites all people under One Creator. Our lodge members include men from a wide range of religious backgrounds, but each of them shares a commitment to this important principle. We value and promote tolerance. Freemasonry transcends religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences.
Relief: Because of our strong bond of Brotherly Love, Masons provide Relief to help those who are in need. This includes the notion of charity, and Masons provide much assistance to worthy charities, but it also means offering a helping hand, in other ways, to people that need assistance. Freemasons practice a way of life based on ethical, moral and philanthropic values.
Truth: As Freemasons, we are committed to being honest and truthful with other people. The Masonic Fraternity teaches a man to be faithful to his responsibilities to God, his Country, his fellow man, his family and himself. The Masonic principle of Truth also teaches a man to search for wisdom and understanding. For only in this way can he grow and become a better person. The pursuit of knowledge is at the very heart of our purpose.
